Singapore’s air quality has dipped into the unhealthy range as southeasterly winds blow smoke haze from forest and peatland fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia, towards Singapore. The National Environment Agency (NEA) forecasts the 24-hour PSI to range between 110 and 180.
Microscopic soot, ash, and carbon compounds that stay suspended for long periods and travel long distances.
Dust, dirt, and larger smoke debris.
Carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides mixed with the particulate cloud.
Driven by transboundary smoke from fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan carried by prevailing winds.
PM2.5 bypasses nose and throat defenses, entering deep lung air sacs and the bloodstream.
Causes eye, nose, and throat irritation, coughing, wheezing, and aggravated asthma or bronchitis.
Children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with pre-existing heart or lung conditions face higher risks.
Scatters sunlight to reduce horizontal visibility and create a grey or brownish sky.
Haze consists of microscopic solid and liquid particles suspended in the air, primarily fine particulate matter like PM2.5 (particles 2.5 micrometers or smaller) and PM10. These particles originate from regional forest and peatland fires, agricultural open burning, vehicle emissions, and industrial smoke.
When haze levels are elevated, wear a well-fitting N95, KN95, or equivalent respirator—especially outdoors or if you have asthma or other respiratory conditions. A regular surgical mask provides limited protection against fine haze particles. Check Singapore’s official Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) before heading outside, reduce strenuous outdoor activity, and seek medical attention if you experience breathing difficulty or chest pain.
